everybody wants to rule the world
the basics
Name || Jyothi Ria Mehta

Age || 21
Occupation || barista/aspiring actress
Gender || female

the appearance

Overall || At 5'2", Jyothi can be easy to overlook, sometimes. With her long dark brown hair, brown eyes, and heart-shaped face, she's actually quite pretty, but sometimes this is taken in a cute-kid-sister sort of way, and so from time to time she really tries to make herself more grown-up and noticeable with popping makeup and eye-catching clothes (where most of her paycheque is spent). When she's at work, however, she tends to tone down her style enough to appease management and keep her hair tied back because, y'know, food safety rules.

Strengths || enthusiastic, supportive, loving, ambitious
Weaknesses || impulsive, prone to wallowing in misery, holds grudges for even stupid reasons, can be manipulative to get her way
Dreams || being famous and powerful
Fears || disappointing her parents, never Making It
the history
Jyothi is the only child of a civil servant and an orthodontist. She grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, and booked two local commercials as a child. This was enough to make her believe a future in stardom awaited her, and her parents did everything they could to support her dream, though they naturally insisted that she keep up her schoolwork. As a result, they didn't devote much time to traveling to cross-country auditions, and Jyothi had to satisfy herself with drama camps during the summer and private acting coaches and voice lessons throughout the rest of her school days. As soon as she graduated, she told her parents she wanted to move to Hollywood, so she could make it big, as she'd always wanted.
Not wanting their only child to be quite so far away, she and her parents eventually compromised on New York City, where she moved not long after she'd turned eighteen. Her parents helped her settle in, and even agreed to pay rent on her tiny apartment--just so they could be sure she was in a safe place with a good lock on the door, and working heating during the winter.
Two years went by, and Jyothi barely managed a job here and there, and nothing with national exposure or the recognition she'd hoped for. She worked various jobs, but with no college credits, she spent all her time in the service industry.
A year ago, she was trying in vain to drop off her resume and headshots at various studios around town, and came across the USBC building. No-one from production wanted to see her...but the coffeeshop on the ground floor was hiring.
Considering it a step closer, Jyothi was promptly hired and trained as a barista, and there she's stayed...learning all the important names and faces from behind the scenes--as well as the names and faces she recognizes from TV. She always tries to give her most winning smiles and charming manners when she sees someone big coming, but so far it's been to little avail. Jyothi isn't at all certain anymore what else she can do, and struggles to keep up her optimism that her dreams will come true.
She also feels hugely guilty that she's told a major lie to her parents. New York rent being what it is, after two years they had begun to talk about Jyothi moving Back Home, and trying something else, if a career in TV and movies wasn't going to work out. In a panic, after getting the job at USBC, Jyothi told her parents she was working with the production team at the studio...she just didn't say in what capacity. Her acting lessons evidently having been worth it, her parents were happy for her news, and they remain convinced that it's only a matter of time before they see their daughter on a show. The lies have snowballed, with Jyothi making up more and more plausible-sounding tidbits and excuses to feed to her parents.
Jyothi isn't so sure, but she's starting to feel there isn't much she wouldn't do if it meant she could have her big break...if only she can make the lie she told her parents true, then it wouldn't matter so much that she lied in the first place, right?
