Anna walked into her apartment and collapsed onto the couch. She was half asleep as she spoke more to herself than anyone, slipping out of her well practiced LA accent that she used in the business. Her native French Canadian accent slipping through as she spoke “Quelle journée!”
Anna sat back with her eyes closed and rested her head on the back of the couch letting out a long breath. OPening her eyes she did look out the windows nearby. She was barely aware of the time knowing that she hadn’t gotten home until late. Thankfully she had a late call tomorrow and didn’t have to show up until the afternoon. It would give her a chance to get proper sleep. Or maybe get some exercise in.

While Avery’s day hadn’t been especially stressful, it had been a long one. She had spent most of the day trapped inside the costume room, making repairs to costumes that had been worn by careless extras. While she could sew up holes and replace sequins (why were there so many sequined dresses anyway? Who watching would even notice if a few had fallen off?), it wasn’t exactly the most glamorous part of her job as a wardrobe assistant. The repetitive nature of it had made the whole day just drag on and on, and when she had got home she had immediately found her stash of Lush bathbombs to indulge herself. One nice, long, hot bath later, she was in a fresh pair of pyjamas and thinking about how nice it would be to go straight to bed about then.
Ave pulled her hair from the messy bun it was in, letting her hair fall softly around her shoulders, as she wandered into the living area of the apartment she shared with Anna. She was slightly surprised to see that her roommate was there, but it wasn’t unwelcome. “Oh hey!” Avery said, “I didn’t hear you come in. Long day?”
She made her way over to the kitchen, filling the kettle so that she could make herself a cup of tea, planning to go for a fruity herbal tea and keep off the caffeine so she could get to bed soon after without too much concern. It wasn’t too late yet, but she was still looking forward to climbing under her sheets, maybe reading or watching something on Netflix to fill some time in before she would go to sleep. “Do you want anything while I’m up?” she asked Anna. One look over at the couch told her that Anna wasn’t moving anytime soon.

“Mmmm” She leaned forward opening her eyes. She absently switched back to her la accent as she spoke this time. “Fifteen hours, take after take. Took long enough but we got what we needed.”
“I knew I liked you for a reason.” Not that she wouldn’t have gotten up eventually but not having to was just a bonus. “Got enough in there for two?” She had seen what Avery had grabbed and that would honestly work really well. It would also help that she didn’t have to get up super really in regards to work. She may still. “What time you getting up tomorrow?” Maybe if it was at a reasonable time she would get up with Avery. Maybe she would just hit the gym. Then again maybe she would just sleep in for an hour as she stiffled a yawn.

“Can’t say I’m jealous,” Avery said, hoping that enough sympathy came through in her voice. She worked with actors every single day and then turned around and lived with one, so she was used to the way things went on the other side of the camera, with the long days, rewrites, and repeated takes until the production team were happy with how everything looked, how everything was delivered, and how it all would piece together in post-production. She was fortunate enough to have one of the more regular schedules out of the people around the studio- it wasn’t often that taking a lunch break was an issue, or arriving and leaving at standard times. It was a perk of being paid in a more traditional way rather than by the episode- that and she was paid overtime if she was needed for a night shoot (which didn’t happen all too often). The takes didn’t even have much impact on how she operated, since she was only in an assistant role.
“Oh, totally!” she said as she spooned the loose leaves into her small teapot. She had always preferred using a teapot to tea bags when she could, though she would never turn down a cup of tea that had been made for her regardless of where it had come from, what kind of tea it was. She was absolutely a coffee drinker during the day, and she spent possibly too much on all the frappuccinos and iced coffees she drank at work from the cafe in the building, but by this time of the evening she was without a doubt favouring tea. Now to just wait for the kettle finish boiling. She selected two mugs (nice big ones) and set them on the counter.
“Regularly early,” she said, wrinkling her nose up at the prospect, “I start work a little later tomorrow but I can’t avoid my laundry any longer.”

That’s another thing she liked about Avery as a roommate. Sure she worked in the business but their views from within were drastically different. That gave them both a chance to talk about work without boring each other. “Just let me be jealous of your schedule for a bit ok? You ever have to work a show for touchups? Not just initial work?” She knew that they often had a makeup artist on site during shooting just in case someone needed a touch up.
Anna sat up and properly payed attention to her roommate as Avery started preparing the tea. Just what she needed really to help unwind from the day. As much as she would love to not be a coffee fiend, coffee was your friend when you worked long hours. This was also why she had opted to get a roommate. Even if they didn’t talk shop so to speak, it allowed her to have conversations like this, not pressure. Nothing but randomness.
She made a face at that. Anna knew she liked nothing more than to sleep in on her late mornings very grateful that she wasn’t at a point in the show where she needed several hours worth of makeup done. “Yeah I kinda need to do that soon.” But at least they lived in a place that had a washer dryer unit. “Not sure if I’ll have the motivation for that tomorrow. But I suppose I should do something productive huh?”

Tag: Anna | WC: 322 | Outfit: n/a | Notes: sorry this took so long!! “Sometimes,” Avery said, reflecting on her experience at the company, “I kind of do whatever the makeup and costume people don’t want to do. If they need an extra pair of hands I’m always there, but it’s not always an issue.” She was still waiting for the day where they had some need for her special effects makeup skills, but on a show like People Matter they didn’t really come up very often. She thought that one day it might win her some bonus points with the makeup team, though. Her portfolio was filled with SFX examples and they knew what she could do, so she hoped that if it came up she might be asked.
The kettle boiled and Avery poured the now hot water over the tea leaves, inhaling the smell of the fruity tea deeply. She knew she had to leave it for at least a couple more minutes before all the flavours and all the health benefits would be drawn out, but it smelled amazing already.
Laundry was just one of those inevitable things about the world. As a person who loved fashion and clothes, Avery wasn’t exactly going to run out of things to wear if she didn’t do her laundry, but even someone with a wardrobe that was as diverse and well stocked as hers needed a few strong signature pieces that could tie everything together and back to her definitive style point of view. “Sometimes you need to let yourself have a break, though,” Ave said, “make sure you look after yourself, right?” A sleep in wouldn’t hurt, and Ave was looking forward to her next sleep in as much as anyone else. She just also knew she had to make the most of her opportunity for a productive morning this time around. She would still put time aside to make something delicious for breakfast and take the time to sit down and enjoy it.

Anna had seen her roommates portfolio and knew that she would love for Avery to work her magic when it came to Halloween. Assuming of course they had time in their schedule. That and Avery was willing. Unfortunately her show had little use for that type of skills either. Then again she also didn’t have to spend the house in the makeup chair that some of the actors on the scifi shows did.
She took in a deep breath of the aroma of the tea as Avery poured it over the leaves. The aroma was tantalizing even from here. But the tea had to steep. Avery was a stickler for that and would give Anna hell for getting her tea early. But it wouldn’t be the first time.
Actually as laundry went she fared better then her roommate. She wouldn’t lie and say that she hadn’t shown up to the studio many days in her pajamas But then since they were providing her wardrobe for the day did it make sense to find something to wear just for the ride in? Sure on days when she felt it was only going to be a half day of shooting she might but if it was a full day? Pajamas all the way. “Yeah I know and you’re right.” She got like this honestly. Deep into her job and forgetting about everything else. It was a great way to have a break down. That was something she really wanted to avoid. “Maybe my laundry will hold a week more.” A good sleep in did sound good.
